Situation
In a headlock from behind, the side of the neck is compressed, putting direct pressure on the carotid arteries. This type of choke restricts blood flow to and from the brain and can cause rapid loss of consciousness if not addressed immediately.
Critical Risks
Interruption of blood flow to the brain (carotid compression)
Rapid dizziness, confusion, or blackout
Loss of balance and muscular control
Risk of falling unconscious within seconds
Increased exposure to strikes or being taken to the ground
Why This Is Extremely Dangerous
Unlike a choke that targets the airway, this technique works by cutting off blood circulation to the brain. Even a few seconds of sustained pressure can result in loss of consciousness, and prolonged compression significantly increases the risk of brain injury or death.
Krav Maga Defense & Counterattack
Send your hands backward and pluck the attacker’s hands to relieve pressure on the neck
Open the choke and pivot toward the attacker at the same time
Pull your head out immediately to restore blood flow
Counterattack explosively with knees to the groin
Continue with additional strikes if necessary
Create distance, scan your surroundings, and move away from the danger zone
Key Points to Remember
This is a life-threatening situation — act immediately
Do not try to endure the choke
Pluck and turn simultaneously to reduce carotid pressure
Explosive counterattacks are necessary to break the attacker’s intent
Escape as soon as blood flow is restored
Training Reminder
Blood chokes must always be trained with extreme caution and under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Even short, uncontrolled pressure on the neck can be dangerous. Safety, control, and communication with your partner are essential.
